In the beaches of Japan, lifeguards are sweeping the waters, ready to prevent the dangers swimmers face in Wakasa Bay, about 320 kilometers from Tokyo. Contrary to common belief, however, the threat is not from sharks but from dolphins, whose attacks in the area have injured at least 47 people since 2022, with some requiring hospital care.

The Archipelago Marine Protection Institute has discovered a dead dolphin, revealing another incident of “deliberate killing,” as stated by the organization. The incident was detected on the northwest coast of Samos in recent days.

When members of the marine mammal team from the International Fund for Animal Welfare rush to a Cape Cod beach to help a stranded dolphin or porpoise, they have no choice but to treat the endangered animal on site and then immediately release it.

That is about to change.

A group of researchers conducting marine studies on whales and dolphins in Türkiye has warned that all of the dolphin species in the Mediterranean are endangered, as their population is in a "vulnerable situation."

A dolphin show center operating in the southwestern province of Muğla's Marmaris district, where five dolphins died within one-and-a-half years, has been finally closed for good.
