Pilots of British Airlines launched a 48-hour strike. They demand higher wages and better working conditions. The protest has canceled 1,600 carrier flights, with an estimated 280,000 passengers affected.

The crew and all passengers on a British Airways flight from London to Valencia were urgently evacuated after smoke filled the cabin shortly before landing, the BBC reported. Three of the passengers were taken to a hospital for preventive check-ups and were later discharged.

British Airways and Lufthansa abruptly suspended flights to Cairo from July 20 over security concerns, but giving no details about what may have prompted the move.

"British Airways" will have to face a record fine - £ 183m because of a breakthrough in security systems that led to the leak of personal data.

Regulators have explained that this is the biggest financial penalty they have imposed and it is for the first time made public by the new rules that are in place.

Financial and personal data has been stolen from potentially hundreds of thousands of British Airways customers who booked online in recent weeks, extending a run of embarrassing technological mishaps suffered by the U.K. flag carrier.

Air France and British Airways announced on Aug. 23 that they will halt flights to Tehran next month, citing low profitability as the US reimposes sanctions on Iran.

London's Heathrow Airport said on Wednesday it was dealing with "a serious accident" involving two vehicles on its airfield, Reuters reported.
The airport, Europe's biggest, was trying to minimize disruption to passengers, it said.

"We are working closely with the emergency services and updates will follow," a spokeswoman for the airport said. 

British Airways passengers suffered a nightmare flight from London to Athens, which ended up taking 33 hours and four planes.
Passengers who were caught up in the ordeal which began on Tuesday last week.
The flight time from London to Athens is less than four hours, but this journey lasted eight times longer.

British Airways (BA) has called on U.K. border authorities to address "serious inefficiencies" causing long delays at airport immigration controls ahead of Britain's exit from the European Union.

BA said difficulties processing passengers after a new electronic gate system was introduced last year were causing long waits in queues, sometimes of more than an hour.

More than 670 flights of the British airline British Airways have been canceled because of a crash in the system, the news agencies reported.
