Buca Prison shut down after 62 years

A well-known prison in the Aegean province of İzmir has been closed after hosting more than 600,000 inmates in 62 years.

The İzmir Closed and Open Penitentiary Institution, also known as the Buca Prison, which was evacuated after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake that occurred last year, was shut down following an approval of the Justice Ministry.

Bad weather cripples life in Turkey’s west

Bad weather disrupted life in the western province of İzmir on Jan. 27, when sudden heavy rainfall and storm hit several districts, flooding houses and shops and knocking down trees.

The floods particularly battered the Karşıyaka district, where the waters of the Aegean Sea overflowed the shore and swept through the streets, submerging vehicles.

Explosion Occurs During Passage of Prison Bus in Western Turkey

An explosion occurred during the passage of a prison bus in the Aegean province of İzmir on Aug. 31. Numbers of security forces and ambulances were dispatched to the scene, Hurriyet reported.

The explosion occurred in a garbage container during the passage of a prison bus in İzmir's Buca district.

40 ISIL suspects linked to Istanbul nightclub attack detained in Turkey's İzmir

Some 40 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suspects allegedly linked to the Jan. 1 Reina nightclub shooting were detained early on Jan. 4 in the Aegean province of İzmir, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Twenty children - nine boys and 11 girls, mostly from Eastern Turkestan, Dagestan and Kyrgyzstan - were reportedly among the detainees.
