The German Bundestag will vote today to declare an epidemic in the country. According to lawmakers, it was clear on Monday night that the decision could not be taken only by the government, but the consent of the parliament was needed.

The German Bundestag has re-elected Angela Merkel as the country's chancellor on Wednesday. She received 364 out of 688 valid votes in the 709-member Bundestag.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was ready to lead her party to a possible new election for the Bundestag instead of risking forming an unstable minority government.

"I am very skeptical about a minority government," she told TVD, adding that "the new elections will be the better way."

German civil rights groups are mobilizing against the newly elected far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and other more hardline groups, vowing to avert the even stronger rightward lurch seen in neighboring countries, Reuters reports.

Former finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was elected speaker of Germany's lower house of parliament on Tuesday, a position from which he will try to impose discipline on far-right lawmakers who opposed his appointment, reported Reuters.
