Serbian gov't adopts new decisions following Belgrade school massacre

BELGRADE - The Serbian government on Thursday adopted new decisions following Wednesday's massacre in a primary school in downtown Belgrade.

Under the decisions, the government proposed a two-year moratorium on issuance of licences for possession and carrying of small firearms.

83 firearms turned over in two weeks

BELGRADE - In two weeks since the Serbian Interior Ministry started its project to legalise firearms, the citizens have turned over only 83 weapons, the daily Danas from Belgrade reports.

According to data from the ministry the newspaper had access to, most of those weapons are air guns, handguns and hunting rifles, along with 5,112 pieces of ammunition of different calibre.

BELGRADE -- A campaign aimed at encouraging citizens to hand in illegal firearms, referred to as "legal legalization", has kicked off in Serbia.

The Ministry of the Interior (MUP) announced on Wednesday that the campaign started on March 4 and will last three months.
