Germany embarks on a groundbreaking shift in drug policy as it implements new legislation aimed at partially liberalizing the cannabis market. With the enforcement of this law, individuals will now have regulated access to marijuana, albeit under stringent conditions, marking a significant departure from previous approaches to drug regulation.

Taking a cue from the fight over immigration, some states that have legalized marijuana are considering providing so-called sanctuary status for licensed pot businesses, hoping to protect the fledgling industry from a shift in federal enforcement policy.

Two Canadian marijuana companies merged to create a $ 6 billion corporation. A buyer on the deal is Aurora Cannabis, which acquires CanniMed Therapeutics, a small cannabis producer, the BBC said.

Vermont became the ninth US state to legalize the use of marijuana for entertainment, Reuters reported.

The Israeli government voted on March 5  in favour of decriminalizing recreational marijuana use, joining some U.S. states and European countries who have adopted a similar approach.

The residents of California approved on Tuesday the legal use by adults of marijuana for personal pleasure.

Thus, the most populous state will be open to the prosperous market for commercial cannabis.

At 90% of processed ballots, 56% have voted "yes".

A ballot measure to make recreational marijuana legal for adults was approved in more states, including California, opening the most populous U.S. state to a burgeoning commercial cannabis market in a major victory for supporters of liberalized drug laws. 

Marijuana has been legalized in the state of Alaska.

People 21 years of age or older can legally hold 28 grams of marijuana at home and grow six marijuana plants.

According to the state, private consumption is legal for adults, but continues to be illegal in public spaces.

The New York Times called for the legalization of marijuana on Saturday, in a bold editorial comparing the federal ban on cannabis to Prohibition.
      
The prestigious publication said pot laws disproportionately impact young black men and that addiction and dependence are "relatively minor problems" -- especially when compared with alcohol and tobacco.
