Drunken motorist arrested outside Parliament after long car chase

After a long car chase that started on the Attiki Odos and culminated outside Greece's Parliament, police early on Monday detained an inebriated motorist.

The upheaval began at 12.45 a.m. on Monday when the 59-year-old driver stopped his car at a set of toll gates on the Attiki Odos and refused to move.

A car chase took place on the Attiki Odos highway that rings the Greek capital early on Tuesday, with police in hot pursuit of a vehicle carrying a group of seven who had held up a fast-food restaurant and attempted to take off with a safe deposit box from a gas station.

The suspects managed to elude police, who also fired shots in the air.

Two people smugglers nabbed in northern Greece

Two men from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia were detained in the area of Asprovalta, northeast of Thessaloniki, on Friday following a police chase.

The two men, aged 28 and 40, had been sat in the front of a vehicle carrying 13 migrants from Pakistan along the Egnatia Highway when officers at a police road block signaled to them to stop for an inspection.

The suspect - a 34-year-old foreign national - was arrested following a car chase along the Egnatia Highway, near the Analipsi toll station, after he ignored a police signal to stop late Friday night.

Gun fire was exchanged during a police car chase on Pentelis Avenue late Friday night. The pursuit took place near the northern Athens suburb of Chalandri when a special motorcycle police unit signalled a vehicle with three people on board to pull over for a routine check. The car refused to comply and attempted to escape.
