Van cats give boost to local tourism

The "Van Cat Villa," which houses numerous domestic cats in the eastern province, has welcomed more than 90,000 visitors in five months, giving a boost to the local tourism.

The Van cats, famous for their different eye colors and pure white fur, are meticulously taken care of at the "Van Cat Villa" located on the Yüzüncü Yıl University campus.

A veterinarian has collected some 500 common traits of cat people, such as leaving the bed's most comfortable part for them or talking to every cat on the street, into a book.

Tarkan Özçetin, the head of KEDVET, a non-governmental organization promoting affection towards and awareness regarding cats, wrote a book in which he answers the question "what is it like to be a cat person."

A total of 130 kittens were born in the Van Cat Villa, a center in the eastern province of Van where rare Van cats are put under protection, in a year, Demirören News Agency has reported.

Van cats are domestic cats found in the Lake Van region that are famous for having heterochromia (one eye blue and the other amber in color).

Following the efforts of experienced photojournalist Mustafa İstemi, who feeds the cats in the parliamentary compound with his wife İnci İstemi every morning, even on holidays, Parliament Speaker Mustafa Şentop instructed a team to be formed to feed the cats.

Woman fined for leaving her cat on street

A woman who left her kitten under a tree has been caught by police teams and has been punished with a fine of 2,724 Turkish Liras.

The woman, identified only by the initials S.Ç., who left her newborn cat under a tree on the boulevard in the eastern province of Elazığ, was fined 2,724 liras for the crime of "abandoning pets."
