The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group's effort to inspire troubled Americans to violence has become more of a terror threat to the U.S. than an external attack by al-Qaida, the FBI director said July 22.

Hours before the Tennessee shooting that killed five U.S. servicemen, the suspected gunman texted his close friend a link to a long Islamic verse that included the line: "Whosoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, then I have declared war against him." 

A 24-year-old gunman opened fire at two US military centers in Tennessee on July 16, killing four Marines in a rampage that officials said was being investigated as an act of "domestic terrorism." 

The gunman who shot and killed four Marines Thursday during attacks at a recruiting center and another US military site in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez.

Abdulazeez, 24, was born in Kuwait, according to local law enforcement source, as cited by Fox News.
