WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States signaled on Thursday it is set to push ahead on trade talks with Canada and Mexico after agreeing to suspend hostilities over tariffs with Europe in a fragile deal that may clear the way for renewed pressure on China.

The White House will open its doors for the president of the European Commission Wednesday, with relations looking strained amid tariffs and the possibility of an all-out trade war.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker wrote to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday to express his condolences for the loss of life from a devastating wildfire in eastern Attica.

It is with a heavy heart that I have learnt that many people have tragically lost their lives in devastating fires in Athens, Greece," Juncker wrote.

Stavros Lambrinidis has been nominated to head the European Union delegation to the US.

The announcement of the nomination of Lambrinidis, who currently serves as EU Special Representative for Human Rights, was made on Thursday by Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. 

The Greek government knew very well for a number of days prior to Thursday's Eurogroup that the last bailout installment might not be approved for disbursement at the meeting, as proved to be the case, having heard the negative noises from the creditors and eurozone capitals regarding the way the decisions were made about the island value-added tax discount.

Footage has emerged showing European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker having to be supported by Nato leaders after repeatedly stumbling.

Mr Juncker, 63, was filmed by news agency AP struggling to keep his balance before a gala dinner in Brussels, Belgium.

This is not the first time he has been filmed unsteady on his feet.
