Idyllic island finally to be rid of construction ruins
Tackling a decade-long situation on the idyllic island of Chrysi, opposite Ierapetra, Crete, the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency and the regional authority have a launched an initiative for the removal of all solid waste and construction remains strewn across the landscape. The two agencies signed a contract Thursday for the financing and implementation of the project.
Missing surfer in Paros found dead
The body of a 42-year-old surfer, whose traces were lost in the sea area of Chrysi Akti (Golden Coast) in Paros on Tuesday, was found by a coast guard boat near the beach on Friday.
According to reports, the 42-year-old had gone out with a friend to surf. However, his friend at some point lost track of him and returned to report him missing.

Wreck from deadly 1983 ferry sinking found off Evia
An expert wreck researcher has located the remains of a ferry boat that went down off the southeastern coast of Evia on the afternoon of February 23, 1983, killing 28 passengers and crew, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency reported on Wednesday.
Minoan compound uncovered on tiny islet
Excavations on the Chrysi islet south of Crete have yielded ruins of a 3,800-year-old Bronze Age settlement of the Minoan period. The Culture Ministry said the compound contained bronze talents, which was a common unit of currency in antiquity, as well as gold jewels and glass beads - some of them of Egyptian origin.

Vehicles burned on Crete in suspected arson attack
Police on Crete are investigating an apparent arson attack on two cars and a motorcycle in a residential car park in the Chrysi Akti area of the old town of Hania.
Firefighters were alerted to the incident in the early hours of Saturday morning and put out the fires before the flames could spread to an apartment block next to the car park.

Greece settles for silver in women's water polo
The Greek women's water polo team ended up second in the European Championship in Barcelona, going down 6-4 to the Netherlands in Friday's final.
The Dutch led 2-0, the Greeks equalized 2-2 and 3-3, but the Netherlands went ahead again 5-3 as the Greek attack went quiet for almost two quarters.
