Two years after the leftist-led government passed much-hyped legislation allowing children who have been born to migrant parents in Greece to obtain Greek citizenship, it is estimated that only half of the 58,000 applications have been approved by the authorities.

Australian minister quits after finding out he may also be Italian
Powerful Australian minister Matthew Canavan on Tuesday became the third politician forced to step aside over a question of dual citizenship, saying he was unaware his mother had taken out Italian citizenship for him when he was 25.
Australian politicians are not eligible to be elected to parliament if they hold dual or plural citizenship.
ECHR Rules European Countries Have Right To Revoke Citizenship of Persons Suspected of Terrorism
European countries have the right to revoke the citizenship of persons suspected of terrorism in order to prevent them from re-entering the country.
This is the ruling of the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) on a case initiated against Great Britain by a Sudanese person with dual citizenship. The decision was final and unanimous.
Swiss voters approves new citizenship rules for third-generation immigrants
Swiss voters on Feb. 12 approved making it easier for third-generation immigrants to become citizens, dismissing suggestions that the move could pose a security threat, as reported by Reuters.
Projections by broadcaster SRF after polls closed showed the measure easily winning by a 59-41 percent margin.
US embassy warns citizens after İzmir attack
The U.S. Embassy has issued a warning to its citizens to avoid an area of İzmir's Bayraklı district following an attack near a courthouse in the vicinity.
"The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that extremist groups are continuing aggressive efforts to conduct attacks in areas where U.S. citizens and expatriates reside or frequent," read the statement on Jan. 5.

Montenegro has granted 203 honorary citizenship to "prominent" figures in summary procedures since 2008, report says.
According to the same report, of that figure, 195 were proposed by Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic .

A new bill on nationality rights for second-generation immigrants has been posted for public consultation. One of the provisions for acquiring Greek nationality for the children of foreigners born in Greece includes enrollment in the first year of Greek primary school and attendance of the Greek education system.

At least one of the parents of second generation migrants must have lived in Greece legally for at least five years before the child?s birth in the country for it to obtain Greek citizenship, according to a draft law due to be submitted to public consultation this week.
