Slovenia on CIVICUS watchlist for restricting fundamental rights
Ljubljana – CIVICUS, an international alliance of NGOs, on Wednesday placed Slovenia on its list of countries to be monitored for a decline in fundamental civil liberties. Under Janez Janša’s government, civil society organisations have been undermined by funding cuts and journalists and the national press agency have been targeted, they wrote.
CIVICUS warns of Janša’s pressure on civil society, media
Ljubljana – CIVICUS, an international organisation of NGOs, warns in its latest report of the attitude of Prime Minister Janez Janša and the Democrats (SDS) towards the civil society and media. It expresses concern over government attacks on the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) and a ban on protests.
Report sees Slovenia narrowing civil freedoms
Ljubljana – CIVICUS, an international organisation of NGOs, has downgraded eleven countries, including Slovenia, in its latest report on civic freedoms in the world. It has put Slovenia among the countries where freedoms have narrowed in 2020, Slovenia’s Centre for Information, Cooperation and Development of NGOs (CNVOS) said on Wednesday.

Gatekeepers of democracy
Who - or what - are the gatekeepers of democracy? What do they do? A colleague in civil society, the director of an NGO board, suggested the term for a conference we are to cohost on the role of NGOs and think-tanks in democracy promotion. The term is commonplace among civil society theorists and practitioners, she assured me. I had my doubts initially.

Turkey's EU Ministry to provide 3 million euros to civil society organizations
The Ministry for European Union Affairs will provide funding worth 3 million euros ($3.7 million) to civil society organizations (CSOs) in the 2019-20 period, the ministry said in a statement on March 20.
