Climate change in Europe

Turkey, which announced the presentation of the Paris Climate Deal to parliament next month, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 21 percent as of 2030 by implementing an action plan with nine major points.

"The country prepared an action plan consisting of some 32 targets and some 81 acts collected under nine major points," daily Milliyet reported on Sept. 23.

The European Parliament and EU member states have agreed a target to cut carbon emissions by "at least" 55 percent by 2030, the EU Commission said in a statement released early Wednesday.

The agreement comes after intense negotiations between parliament, who wanted at least 60 percent reduction, and leaders of the member states, who agreed 55 percent in November.

The total reported economic losses caused by weather- and climate-related extremes in the 33 EEA member countries between 1980 and 2016 amounted to more than €450bn, according to a recent study released by the European Environment Agency.

The south and southeaster regions of Europe, including Bulgaria, will be affected most by the unfavourable effects of climate change on the continent.

The forecast is for heat waves and droughts to occur mostly in these particular regions.
