Efforts by the Hellenic Coast Guard on Wednesday morning to rescue 40 migrants on a dinghy off the coast of the eastern Aegean island of Chios were hindered by a Turkish coast guard boat.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Wednesday he was "strictly against the behavior of Turkey" after a Turkish coast guard patrol vessel rammed a Greek coast guard boat near Imia islets around midnight on Monday. 

The Turkish Coast Guard on Jan. 28 blocked Greece’s defense minister from approaching a pair of disputed islets in the Aegean, according to Turkey’s Interior Ministry.

The total death toll in the Sept. 22 sinking of a boat carrying migrants heading to Europe in the Black Sea, off the Turkish province of Kocaeli, rose to 24 after the body of another woman was found by search-and-rescue teams on Sept. 24, according to the Turkish Coast Guard.        

Coast guard officers on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos have said that a migrant rescue officially reported as having been carried out without incident had actually involved serious tension with Turkish counterparts on Wednesday.

A serious incident took place between a Greek coast guard vessel and a Turkish boat off the coast of the Island of Lesvos in Greek territorial waters, according to local news site Lesvosnews.gr.

More than 300 Syrian migrants fleeing from their war-torn country have been stopped by Turkish Coast Guard crews in the west of the Black Sea while attempting to cross into European countries, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Sept. 11. 

Coast guard crews stopped an unnamed fishing boat carrying 93 Syrians and one Afghan in the Black Sea near Istanbul.

A total of 420 illegal migrants were apprehended off Turkey's Aegean coast over the past week, Turkish Interior Ministry stated on Aug. 19. Between Aug. 11 and Aug. 18, Turkish Coast Guards intercepted 420 migrants in nine separate incidents off the Aegean Sea, the ministry said in a statement. It said one migrant smuggler was also detained during the operations.

On Aug. 2, locals informed the Coast Guard Command about a group of migrants attempted to cross the sea in a plastic boat from the Aegean province of Aydın's Didim district.
