Attempt to appoint new Ombudsman fails

An attempt to elect a new Ombudsman has fallen through, with the government's nominee failing to secure the support of three-fifths of the members of Parliament's 30-member conference of speakers.

The nominee, Athens University politics professor Dimitris Sotiropoulos, received the backing of the 15 New Democracy members of the conference.

New poll shows PASOK steadily holding second place

According to the Pulse survey for SKAI TV, New Democracy leads with 24%, holding an 11-point lead over PASOK at 13%. SYRIZA ranks third with 10%, followed by the Communist KKE at 8% and Nationalist Greek Solution at 7.5%. The left-wing Plefsi Eleftherias stands at 4%, while both religious nationalist Niki and nationalist Voice of Reason each poll at 3.5%.

Number of independent MPs growing

The announcement by SYRIZA on Friday during a House plenary session to expel Athina Linou from its parliamentary group meant an increase in the number of independent MPs, until further notice, to 14.

This number, just a year after the national elections, makes independent MPs the fifth most numerically powerful force in Parliament.
