Consensus decision-making

The face of a forward-looking Greece

The new Greek president, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, will do her best to help a society with a long democratic tradition to heal the wounds of the past. She also highlighted the importance of the rule of law, and noted her dedication to working with the Parliament, the government and the opposition to achieve the highest possible consensus.

Editorial: A step toward progress

The broad acceptance of the candidacy of Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou for the highest office in the land vindicates the prime minister's choice.

It also sends a strong message of consensus which the country needs at this critical juncture.

Beyond the obvious symbolism this decision should signal the start of a new era in Greek politics.

Lines and reservations

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' meetings Friday with the leaders of the country's opposition parties to discuss his trip to the United States and developments in foreign policy confirmed that there is no alternative proposal in terms of national strategy as far as Turkey is concerned. There is only one official line, with slight variations.

Time for consensus

The meetings scheduled by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for Friday with the leaders of the country's opposition parties on actions taken by his government on key national issues as well as the outcome of his visit this week to the United States, where he met with President Donald Trump, are essential.

Pretensions

All political parties agree that in normal countries there is no need for police to guard closed universities. Interestingly, there's no consensus on how normal institutions are meant to operate.
