Union calls for strike at Cosco-controlled dock in Piraeus

A rare strike has been called at the container terminal at the main port of Piraeus run by Chinese shipping giant Cosco, a union official said.

“A strike has been called until Monday by around 150 dock workers,” Giorgos Georgakopoulos, head of the federation of Greek port employees (OMYLE), told AFP.

Over 10 million packets of contraband cigarettes seized in Piraeus

Some 10.6 million packets of cigarettes were found on Wednesday in two of three cargo containers labeled as containing office supplies that arrived at the port of Piraeus from Dubai.

The first of the three containers held 529,000 packets of Ashford King Size cigarettes and the second the same amount of the Tradition brand.

They represent some 3.7 million euros in lost taxes.
