Consitutional court finds prison guilty of maltreatment

An ex-convict who sued the prison administration where they had served their sentence, citing overcrowded wards and lack of hygiene, has been entitled to compensation of 78,000 Turkish Liras in a precedent-setting verdict by the Constitutional Court.

Fatih Seyis, the ex-convict who was imprisoned in Düzce Closed Penal Institution for a crime he committed, was released in 2019.

Inmates produce rose cologne amid virus outbreak

Prison inmates in the Central Anatolian province of Isparta, famous for its rose, are producing 130 tons of rose cologne every month in the facility's cosmetic workshop.

Products from the workshop, which has been open for nearly two years, are sold all over Turkey, while convicts and detainees also earn income from production.

Three convicts get life terms for killing lawyer

An Athens court handed life terms to three Albanian convicts on Thursday after finding them guilty of the murder of Athens lawyer Michalis Zafeiropoulos in 2017.

Following a prosecutor's proposal for an exemplary punishment, the court sentenced Ibrahim Brahimai, who shot the lawyer, to life, plus an additional 11 years.

Government evasive on key issue

The leftist government took an evasive stance on a complicated legal issue. It tried, through the remarks of its justice minister, to obscure the fact that the new penal code which was passed shortly before the dissolution of Parliament, will grant convicted members of the now-defunct November 17 urban guerrilla group the right to apply for conditional release.

Private time with spouse has positive impact on prisoners: Justice Ministry

Turkey's Justice Ministry has praised a 2013 policy to reward well-behaved convicts and arrestees with a "pink room" - a room to spend time with their spouses in private - for having a positive impact on prisoners. A total of 54,002 convicts were rewarded with pink room visits over the past three years, the ministry said.
