Hurricane winds, fierce storms leave several dead in France, Italy

 Violent thunderstorms and hurricane-force winds left at least eight dead on Aug. 18 in France and Italy, uprooting trees in Tuscany and on the French island of Corsica and ripping away brick shards from St. Mark's famed bell tower in Venice. Over 100 boats in the Mediterranean Sea called for emergency help, authorities said.

Shooting at Corsica Airport, One Killed and Two Others Injured

In shooting near the airport in Bastia on the French island of Corsica today, one person was killed and two injured, the France press reported.

One man is killed, one 40-years old is seriously injured with danger to life, and a 35-year-old man is wounded slightly, sources told by the agency, according to information.

Fires destroy 1,400 hectares of forest in southern France

Fires have destroyed some 1,400 hectares of forest and woodlands in the south of France and the island of Corsica on July 24, authorities said. 

The biggest fire was in the village of Bastidonne, in the Vaucluse region, where fires, intensified by strong winds, consumed some 600 hectares of forest.
