North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered officials to wage a tougher epidemic prevention campaign in "our style" after he turned down some foreign COVID-19 vaccines offered via the U.N.-backed immunization program.

The EU has reached on Tuesday a crucial milestone with 70% of the adult population now fully vaccinated, European Commission announced. In total, over 256 million adults in the EU have now received a full vaccine course.

The EU will recognise national Covid certificates from Turkey, Ukraine and North Macedonia from Friday, opening the way to easier travel for their residents, the European Commission said.

The "equivalence decisions" mean those three countries' certificates will be connected to the bloc-wide EU Digital Covid Certificate system, the EU executive said in a statement.

The number of COVID-19 infections recorded worldwide passed 200 million on Aug. 5, an AFP count showed, as China pledged to provide two billion vaccine doses this year to combat surging infections caused by the Delta variant.

As many Asian countries battle their worst surge of COVID-19 infections, the slow-flow of vaccine doses from around the world is finally picking up speed, giving hope that low inoculation rates can increase and help blunt the effect of the rapidly spreading delta variant.

Ljubljana – Slovenia will donate EUR 500,000 to Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX), a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines, this and next year, the government decided on Thursday. The country will also donate 250,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Egypt.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday repeated his appeal for a global vaccination plan to boost vaccine equity as deaths from COVID-19 topped 4 million worldwide.

Ljubljana – The government decided on Thursday to donate 48,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Bosnia-Herzegovina as a humanitarian aid during the Covid-19 epidemic. The epidemiological situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina is not favourable and only 7.7% of the population was vaccinated with at least one shot until 13 July, the government said.

A "huge number" of poorer countries have had to suspend their coronavirus vaccination programmes due to a lack of doses, the World Health Organization said on June 18.
