Train Station master Responsible for Tempi Tragedy, Vasilis Samaras, Released Under Conditions

Vasilis Samaras, the stationmaster of Larissa who was held responsible for the tragic train accident in Tempi, has been released under specific conditions. Although his 18-month pre-trial detention was set to expire on September 1, he has been granted release with the conditions of a travel ban and house arrest.

Thessaloniki bus driver convicted

A Thessaloniki bus driver was sentenced to five months in prison, with a three-year suspension, after being found guilty of injuring an elderly woman who fell as she tried to board the city bus. 

The Three-Member Criminal Court of Thessaloniki found him guilty of bodily harm by negligence. 

5 ex-officials were convicted over Greece’s deadliest fire but freed after paying fines

A court in Athens convicted five former senior firefighting and disaster response officials on Monday, over a 2018 wildfire outside the capital that killed more than 100 people.

The fire that swept through the seaside town of Mati, east of Athens, was the deadliest in the country's history. Residents and vacationers, many trapped in their cars, were killed as they tried to escape.

The people who cause devastating and sometimes even deadly wildfires every year are effectively not treated like criminals. This is not only because the punishments foreseen in the law are utterly disproportionate to the consequences of their actions.

Handler of crashed jet ski arrested

The 32-year-old handler of the jet ski that crashed onto a wooden hut on Crete, leaving one 10-year-old boy seriously injured, was arrested on Thursday.

According to a statement released by the Hellenic Coast Guard, the 32-year-old man is being charged with a count of violating the safety of transportation and one of negligent bodily harm.
