An examining magistrate on Thursday decided to detain until his trial a 50-year-old prison employee from Megara, western Attica, accused of killing his wife's 48-year-old brother and attempting to kill the latter's spouse last Thursday.

Since the start of this case, he has denied that he killed his wife, a folk music singer, and has been charged with the criminal offence of a serious murder, for which he is facing up to 40 years in prison and is defending himself released from custody.

A council of misdemeanor court judges on Wednesday rejected an appeal by former defense minister Yiannos Papantoniou to be released following a year in pre-trial custody.

Instead, the council extended his detention for another six months.

Papantoniou was remanded in custody in October 2018, and his wife Stavroula Kourakou in March of this year.

The 27-year-old man who has admitted to the rape and murder of US biologist Suzanne Eaton on Crete was remanded in custody on Friday after appearing before an investigating magistrate for a reported four hours.

He was found guilty by both the magistrate and the prosecutor.
