Slovenia has one the largest brown bear populations in Europe and it is not uncommon to spot one walking in the woods or even in settled areas. Like the wolf and the lynx, the brown bear is a protected species, but the population is managed by culling. Last year, 206 bears were culled.

Court allows culling of 222 bears
Ljubljana – An environmental organisation has lost a legal battle against the Environment Ministry’s decision to allow the culling of 222 brown bears in Slovenia this year, by the end of September. The Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning said the ruling showed its decision for the culling was legally right and professional.

Farmers warn of damage caused by wildlife
Ljubljana – Farmers have been pointing out the serious damage caused by wild animals, as the Slovenian Forest Service (ZGS) estimates that it amounts to between EUR 400,000 and EUR 800,000 per year. The most affected region is Pomurje in the north-east, and the damage is most often caused by wild boars and deer.

Pig Farms Affected by African Swine Fever in Rousse Await BGN 1,5 Million Compensation
The three industrial pig farms in Bulgaria's Rousse district where outbreaks of African Swine Fever were registered are awaiting 1.5 million BGN in compensation for the burial of culled animals and disinfection of the sites, reports BNT.
The amount was specified in a public procurement tender called by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency. The contractors were selected by negotiations.
Farmers Protest Livestock Cull in Bulgaria after Rinderpest Outbreak
Euronews: Hundreds of farmers in Bulgaria have protested in the capital Sofia against a government mass slaughter of livestock.
The cull was prompted by an outbreak of ovine rinderpest which was found at a farm close to the border with Turkey. The disease is highly contagious but doesn't infect humans and is the first major outbreak in the EU.
