Turkish PM says decree grants immunity only to civilians who helped defeat July 15 coup attempt

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said early Dec. 27 that a new emergency decree granting immunity to civilians fighting against coup attempts only applied to those who took part in thwarting the July 15, 2016, coup attempt.

Millions of people have begun marking the first year anniversary of the July 15, 2016, failed coup attempt in all 81 provinces, with people in Istanbul gathering on July 15 Martyrs Bridge.

July 15 Martyrs Bridge, previously called Bosphorus Bridge, was blocked by coup plotters during last year's thwarted coup and 34 people were killed by coup soldiers.

Turks have flocked to the streets to mark the anniversary of the July 15, 2016, failed coup attempt, widely believed to have been orchestrated by the followers of the U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen. 

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has previously called on citizens in all 81 provinces of Turkey to participate in "democracy watches."
