Bulgaria - One of the EU Countries with the Highest Share of Elderly Population
In 2019, 20.3% of the EU population was aged 65 years or over; this was 0.3 percentage points higher than a year before and 2.9 percentage points higher than the corresponding share from a decade earlier. Back Migrant Integration: Highest Overcrowding Rate in Bulgaria
In the European Union (EU), 35% of non-EU citizens were living in overcrowded households in 2018, meaning they did not have the number of rooms appropriate to the size of the household. By contrast, this rate was 17% for nationals and 20% for foreign EU citizens (i.e. EU citizens residing in another EU country), Eurostat reported.
Eurostat: Nearly 1/3 of Bulgarians Could Not Afford a One-Week Vacation in 2018
For many in the European Union, summer means rest and travel. But 28.3% of the EU population over the age of 16 could not afford a one-week vacation away from home in 2018, according to Eurostat data released today.
In 2013, this share was 39.5%.
Eurostat: EU Population up to Nearly 513 million on 1 January 2018
On 1 January 2018, the population of the European Union (EU) was estimated at 512.6 million, compared with 511.5 million on 1 January 2017. During the year 2017, more deaths than births were recorded in the EU (5.3 million deaths and 5.1 million births), meaning that the natural change of the EU population was negative.
More than Half a Million Bulgarians Live and Work in other EU Countries
More than half a million Bulgarians aged 20-64 live and work in other EU Member States, according to data from Eurostat analysis on working-age Europeans in this age bracket who lived in a different EU country from their homeland in 2017. According to the analysis, about 4 percent of EU citizens were living in a country other than their nationality last year.
The Population of the EU has Increased by 1.5 Million due to Immigrants
Last year the population of the European Union increased by 1.5 million and reached 511.8 million. This is mainly due to the immigrants who come to live on the continent. Data is from the EU statistical institute - Eurostat, quoted by Mediapool.
35% of Bulgarian Population Living in Poverty
A 2016 Eurostat poll on social trends and poverty indexes within the EU has found out that some 2.5M Bulgarians, or nearly 35% of the population, lived in poverty.

NSI: Bulgarian Population Decreased by 0,7% in 2016 Compared to 2015
As of December 31, 2016 Bulgaria's population is 7,101,8 people, which is 1.4% of the EU population. According to the National Statistical Institute in its report on ''Population and Demographic Processeses in 2016'', released today, the process of declining and aging of the population in Bulgaria continues.
Compared to 2015 the population decreased by 0.7% or by 51,951 people.

As of end-December 2013 the population of Bulgaria was 7,245,677 persons representing 1.5% of the EU population, ranking the country at the 16th place immediately after Austria.
