EU alarmed over detention of HDP lawmakers

The European Union has warned Turkey to respect democratic norms in the fight against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), while EU member state ambassadors to Ankara discussed possible outcomes of a further deterioration of ties between Brussels and Turkey over the detention of several Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) deputies.

Brother of jailed PKK leader visits İmralı Island for Eid meeting

The brother of Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), paid a visit to Imralı Island Prison in the Marmara Sea on Sept. 11, one day after the jailed PKK leader was granted a family visit during the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday on the island where he is serving an aggravated life term.

This is the "New Turkey"

Watching Tuesday?s swearing-in ceremony for newly elected deputies, one could not help thinking that this is a parliament which truly represents the ?New Turkey,? and not the one the Justice and Development Party (AKP) talked about when it held the parliamentary majority and called the shots.

We should not miss the right perspective

The new parliament opened yesterday with fresh deputies delivering one by one an oath a few of them will forget about soon. And for the second time in less than a month, Deniz Baykal was back under the camera lights; for a change, he did not need an operation by the embattled sultan. Instead, his old age carried him to the "provisional" speakership of parliament.
