Record fine imposed on tanker polluting sea
A record fine of 30 million Turkish Liras ($1.6 million) has been imposed on a tanker at the port in the northwestern province of Kocaeli due to leakage caused into the sea while transferring fuel oil.
The fuel overflowed into the sea due to the pressure while transferring it to the tanker named "Atacama," anchored in a port in the Körfez district.

The cancer rate in the industrial Dilovası district, located in the northwestern Turkish province of Kocaeli, is three times higher than the world average, daily Habertürk reported on April 10.

Worker killed due to explosion at rolling plant in Turkey's Kocaeli
One worker was killed and 15 were injured due to an explosion at a factory in the Marmara province of Kocaeli on Jan. 13, Doğan News Agency has reported.
The explosion occurred in a steel pit at a rolling plant in an industrial site in the province's Dilovası district at 11:00 a.m. Witnesses said the explosion occurred while the pit was under reparation.

Fire erupts at factory in Istanbul
A fire has erupted at a sponge factory in Istanbul's Tuzla district on Dec. 3, Doğan News Agency reported.
Many firefighters were dispatched to the Tuzla Organized Industrial Site to fight the fire.
The fire was taken under control after around one hour's work, which included help from choppers, daily Habertürk reported on its website on Dec. 3.

Street animals protected in industrial zones close to Istanbul
Several firms have announced their participation in a project for the protection of stray animals in industrial zones close to Istanbul.
The project, led by Friterm and titled "Kids of our streets," has been implemented with the support of firms located in the Dilovası district of Kocaeli and in the Tuzla district of Istanbul, both industrial zones.
