Jailed presidential candidate of HDP makes landmark pre-recorded election speech from prison

Selahattin Demirtaş, the jailed presidential candidate of the Kurdish issue-focused Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), made his campaign speech on the state broadcaster TRT on June 17 from prison, marking a first in Turkey and the world's political history.

Selahattin Demirtaş, the jailed presidential candidate from the Kurdish issue-focused Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), reached out to voters through his wife's phone on June 6, holding a campaign "rally" from his prison cell in the northeastern province of Edirne.

The jailed Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş appeared before the court on Jan. 12 for the first time, 14 months after his detention. He demanded the case be referred to the Constitutional Court. Demirtaş argued that the cases were a violation of the legislative immunity granted to him through his lawmaker status.
