The city of Dover witnessed mounting tensions and live chain on Tuesday as hundreds of people were stranded there. Among them there were many Bulgarians, including eight babies. All of them came to Dover on Sunday night, after the borders were shut because of the new coronavirus strain spreading across the UK.

France and Britain will reopen cross-border travel on Dec. 23 after a snap 48-hour ban to curb the spread of a new coronavirus variant threatened U.K. supply chains.

Much of Europe swiftly banned British travelers and U.K. freight entering their nations after the discovery of a more transmissible variant of COVID-19 in Britain.

Britain's government said on Dec. 20 it would hold a crisis meeting after countries worldwide banned arrivals from the U.K. over a new highly infectious coronavirus strain it said was "out of control", as the WHO called for stronger containment measures.    

Britain and France have agreed to boost bilateral cooperation over a spike in migrants trying to cross the Channel, the UK's Home Office said Sunday.

In the coming weeks, the two countries will increase surveillance patrols and focus on measures to dismantle trafficking gangs and improve awareness about the dangers of sea crossings in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
