An oil spill that originated in Syria's largest refinery has reached the Samandağ district of Turkey's southern province of Hatay as local authorities have warned residents not to swim.

As Montenegro explores offshore for oil and gas, a state body and environmentalists say authorities are not doing enough to mitigate the potential impact of oil spills or other environmental disasters.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake rocked eastern Turkey early on Aug. 12, according to the country's disaster agency.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the quake struck Iğdır province at 02.29 a.m. local time (1129GMT).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.47 kilometers (4 miles), said AFAD.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitstotakis speaks with locals on the island of Evia on Monday while surveying the damage caused by flash floods due to heavy rainfall on Sunday. A prosecutor on the island has ordered an investigation to determine whether any person or body can be held responsible for the deaths of eight people, including an infant, due to the floods.
