EGM: prevention of violence against women and girls

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) launched an awareness and donation campaign to draw attention to the needs of quake-stricken women and young girls on March 8, International Women's Day.

The fund invited everyone to support their campaign to reach more women.

Rape is being used in conflict as a deliberate military strategy, and is feared most by women and girls when the shooting starts.

They are right to be afraid. It is vital to highlight just how shockingly common rape and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence have become in humanitarian settings worldwide.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) welcomes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, reiterating its "firm" commitment to promoting and protecting women's rights, and to continuing the fight to eradicate all forms violence against women and girls.

Famous women from across Turkey have shared their personal “violence stories,” describing their own experiences, ideas and advice on the issue of violence against women.

Turkey's top business organization has outlined the steps which need to be taken by workplaces to fight violence against women in a book.

The book stressed that violence against women still posed a major problem both in Turkey and abroad, regardless of "excuses" people have often pointed to such as low education and income levels.

Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women marked

BELGRADE -- One in two women in Serbia experiences "some kind of violence," Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlović has said.

Current efforts to prevent domestic violence are insufficient as a third of women worldwide are physically abused, according to a series of studies by the World Health Organization published on Nov. 21.

Between 100 to 140 million women are victims of genital mutilation and around 70 million girls are married before 18, often against their will.
