Over 1,000 Turks died in work accidents in 2015

Some 1,025 people were killed in workplace accidents in Turkey in just the first 10 months of 2015, according to data from the Social Security Institution (SGK). 

In 2014, in which 301 people were killed in the huge mine disaster in Soma, 1,497 people were killed at work, according to the data. In 2013, 1,315 people died in occupational incidents. 

Lawsuit opened against officials responsible for killing 18 miners in Ermenek

A lawsuit has been opened into accused of responsibility in a mine accident in the Central Anatolian province of Karaman's Ermenek district that left 18 workers dead last year.

The Ermenek Public Prosecutor's Office announced that a civil lawsuit had been launched at a high criminal court on charges of causing the death of more than one person through conscious negligence.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said safe rooms should be compulsory in mines and subcontracting must end in Turkey's mining sector, as he attended the Dec. 5 funerals of five miners who died after being trapped in a coal mine in the Central Anatolian town of Ermenek.
