Greek shipowners could relocate to Britain after it leaves the European Union if European regulators demand changes to favorable shipping taxes in Greece, a top industry official said on Friday.

Greece remains the global leader in shipping, as the latest annual report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) shows that the share of the global merchant fleet owned by Greeks in terms of capacity has risen from 16.1 percent in 2015 to 16.36 percent this year.

Sirens sounded this week in the all-important Greek shipping sector, a field where Greek interests traditionally enjoy top international rankings in terms of vessel ownership, revenues, tonnage and annual percentage of transported cargo.
