Fat tax

Out of the blue, Greece was hit by a proposal from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to impose a tax on foods high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS), taxes known as "health taxes," "sugar tax" or "fat tax."

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has called for a sugar tax on soft drinks, saying that Australia’s obesity problem is due to people “sitting on their backsides” and “eating too much food.”

‘If you want to deal with being overweight,” he said, “here’s a rough suggestion: stop eating so much and do a bit of exercise.”

The opposition Social Democrats said on Monday that it was scandalous that the government of a country that ranks among the poorest in Europe was even considering imposing more tax on food in an attempt to combat obesity.
