A 63-year-old motorist died Tuesday when his car was swept up by floodwaters on a country road near Scholari in the municipality of Thermi following heavy rainfall.

A 64-year-old woman who had been in the car with him managed to get out of the vehicle and was transferred to the hospital with symptoms of hypothermia.

The defence ministry dispatched some 700 soldiers to help build dams and shore up defences against high waters after flooding from Thursday to Sunday inundated streets and sparked evacuation alerts in some parts of the country.

This year's Night of Museums will take place in fewer cities in Serbia compared to the previous years, due to severe flooding.

Heavy rain, causing rivers to overflow, has killed four people, including a child, in the Teleorman county of southern Romania, according to the authorities. Two other people are still missing and hundrends have also been evacuated because their homes flooded.
