As urban traffic gets more miserable, entrepreneurs are looking to a future in which commuters hop into "air taxis" that whisk them over clogged roads.    

Companies such as Archer, Joby and Wisk are working on electric-powered aircraft that take off and land vertically like helicopters then propel forward like planes.    

Aeronautical vehicle manufacturer Boeing and sports car company Porsche are working in partnership to create an autonomous flying vehicle suitable for urban transportation. Its innovative concept was officially unveiled on Thursday.

Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar's chief technology officer announced the prototype of a flying car on Aug. 6, which if materialized could become the first-of-its kind in the country.

A gyrocopter, the closest thing modern aviation has to a flying car, gave its first service as an air taxi on Oct. 29 in the southwestern province of Denizli during an inauguration ceremony.

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry on Monday launched studies to put flying cars into practical use.

The ministry intends to promote technological development and work out legislation through public-private cooperation for such futuristic vehicles, ministry officials said.

Flying cars may still seem like a gimmick to some but the reality is that company's across the world are working furiously to make them a reality. 

Benefits of flying cars would be to reduced commuting times and a way to alleviate some pressure of congestion and traffic jams across busy roads. 

From "The Jetsons" to "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", flying cars have long captured the imagination.

While several futuristic projects are under way in different countries, a Dutch design may be the first one sold and soaring into the skies.

Engineers, supported by Toyota Motor Corp, demonstrated their flying car on June 3, which they hope will be able to light up the Olympic flame for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games.

For or instance, last year scientists made clothes that could repair themselves with just a touch of warm water, shoes that lace themselves, a robot that can autonomously make a complete garment, and skin-like material that will mean an end to facelifts and dark bags under the eyes. Flying cars, anyone? They're not that far from becoming reality.
