Foreign involvement in the Syrian Civil War

Turkey’s social democrat opposition party has said it disapproved the military strike carried out by the United States-led Western powers into Syria without solid evidence that chemical weapons were used by the Syrian regime and has urged the Turkish government to follow a cautious policy in the Middle East.

The US, UK and France have launched strikes "on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities" in Syria, US President Donald Trump announced early on Saturday. 

The strikes come after a suspected chemical weapons attack in the former rebel stronghold of Douma last weekend.

Russia and Iran, both allies of the Bashar Al-Assad regime in Syria, strongly condemned the joint strikes carried out in Syria by the United States, France and Britain on April 14.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on April 12 that he would discuss a chemical weapons attack on the Syrian suburb of Douma with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin by phone on April 12 night.

ISRAELI Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Wednesday for action to be taken against Syria, as the UK, the US and numerous allies signalled they are gearing up for a military strike against the Assad regime following a chemical attack in Douma, writes The Daily Express.

Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli told this to 24TV on Wednesday, TASS is reporting.

"If an attack occurs against the forces (in Syria) backed by Russia or there is an attack by the US-supported forces, Russia won't be able to stay away, otherwise it will lose its influence. So, serious clashes may start," he said.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım on April 11 urged Russia and the U.S. to end their “street fight” amid threats both sides were making over Syria after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would hold accountable the Syrian regime and its allies Russia and Iran for a chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of people outside Damascus.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized Russia's stance on the future of Syria's Afrin region, saying on April 10 that Ankara itself would decide the details of returning the area to the Syrian people.

Turkey, Russia and Iran have stressed their joint determination to speed up efforts to “ensure calm on the ground and protect civilians” in Syria, in a joint statement released by the three countries following a tripartite summit in Ankara on April 4.

 Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura will hold talks in Moscow on Thursday about the latest situation in Syria, the RIA news agency reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed diplomatic source.
