Iran accused Jan. 7 the Saudi-led coalition battling Shiite rebels in Yemen of hitting its embassy there in an overnight airstrike, but the building bore no visible damage.

As if the Middle East did not have enough tension, a new one has been added with the new year: An Iran-Saudi clash, which has already deep roots, that further escalated with Saudi Arabia's execution of prominent Shiite cleric and activist Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr. In return, angry crowds in Tehran stormed the Saudi embassy, while Saudi Arabia officially cut all ties with Iran.

Ankara called for calm, while opposing the executions, as tensions between Iran and its Sunni Arab neighbors reached new heights on Jan. 4 as Saudi Arabia and its allies cut or downgraded diplomatic ties with Tehran in a row over the execution of a Shiite cleric. 

French businesses want to boost their presence in Saudi Arabia's growing electricity, telecommunications and poultry sectors, embassy officials said on May 19 during the visit of a trade delegation.

I have to admit that I was a little late in catching up with the tension between Sweden and Saudi Arabia. For latecomers like me, let me summarize the situation.

First let me start by recalling that the Swedish government announced a ?feminist? foreign policy when it took office in September.

The U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia said it had suspended consular services in the kingdom for two days due to "heightened security concerns", after warning of threats against Western oil workers.   
    
All services in Riyadh and at the consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran have been cancelled for March 15 and March 16, it said in a statement posted on its website on March 14.

President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an is set to embark on a one-day trip to Saudi Arabia on Feb. 28 to meet new Saudi King Salman, who assumed his post last month. Erdo?an had attended the former king?s funeral, along with other world leaders, and is now paying an official visit to Riyadh.
