The EU needs a 'global' Green New Deal that ends the West's hypocritical relationship with overseas fossil fuel investment, writes Muhammad Magassy.

Preventing deforestation should be key to fighting climate change as forests store carbon and provide oxygen and water, according to an official with a nonprofit environmental group.       

A non-government group that monitors the Amazon rainforest has said that the pace of deforestation has been increasing.

Тhe World Wildlife Fund warned that from today, May 10, the EU will have exhausted the resources that the planet can give it for a year, and noted that this "day of overrun" is occurring earlier every year, reports France.

In 2018 12 million hectares of tropical rainforests or 30 football fields per minute were destroyed, the World Resources Institute reported. 3.64 million of these destroyed forests are primary and essential for climate and biodiversity, BTA reports.

The Turkish government has extended a deadline for citizens who have applied to obtain deeds for unregistered lands, which were formerly classified as forestry areas and dubbed "2B lands," by making the required payments but were not able to acquire them, a top official has announced. 

People living in the village of Brankovtsi near Vidin protested Friday against the illegal deforestation in the vicinity.

According to protesters close to 1,000 cubic meters of wood have been cut in the village forest, but local inspectors report one third of that number.
