Fournoi Korseon

A wildfire broke out on Saturday afternoon on the Eastern Aegean island complex of Fourni, the fire service said. 

The blaze is burning low vegetation in the Kamari area of the Fourni Korseon municipality, on the main island. Only volunteers were available to tackle the flames using four water tankers but eight firefighters and a helicopter are expected to arrive at the island soon.

In 2023, more than 32 million tourists visited Greece, a number that was 17.6% higher compared to 2022. Overtourism is already a reality on many Greek islands, and appears to be largely responsible for making existing water scarcity more severe.

The Hellenic Armed Forces announced on Tuesday that they conducted a naval drill on recapturing an islet in the Aegean on Monday night, attended by the Minister of Defence, Nikos Dendias.

A pair of Turkish fighter jets on Monday violated Greek air space in the Aegean for the second time in as many hours on Monday, flying over the island of Chios, in the eastern Aegean, at 3,700 feet, the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA) said. 

Two pairs of Turkish fighter jets on Monday violated Greek air space over the islets of Anthropofagi and Makronisi, which are part of the Fournoi and Oinousses group, without first submitting a flight plan. 

Another day of tension prevailed in the Aegean Tuesday as Turkish fighter jets violated Greek national airspace 30 times.

Seven of those violations resulted in mock dogfights with Greek F-16s. Five overflights were also recorded in Arkioi, Leipsoi, Makronisi, Anthropofagous and Fournoi.
