The European Commission on Tuesday asked Slovenia and Croatia to "implement" a ruling that gave Ljubljana key access to international waters off the Croatian coast, a decision rejected by Zagreb.

The European Commission decided Jan. 13 to open a case against Poland over new constitutional court and media legislation that have been criticized as running counter to the bloc's fundamental principles about the rule of law.

There would be a surge in right-wing extremism across Europe unless the migrant crisis isn't tackled properly, the European Commission First Vice President Frans Timmermans warned on Thursday.

'Sustainable solutions' to the migrant crisis are needed, Timmermans told the BBC radio.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Tuesday said that Romania has the support of the European Commission and the European Parliament concerning the accession to the Schengen area, however it still has to persuade "one or two member states" which "still have reserves" in this regard.
