A developer that has drawn public anger for a project of château-style villas designed especially to lure Arab customers in a historical town in Turkey’s northwest has gone bankrupt.

NEW YORK (AP) — A protest against U.S. immigration policy forced the evacuation of the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July, with a group unfurling a banner from the pedestal and a woman holding police at bay for hours after she climbed the base and sat by the statue's robes.

The 21st Aydın Doğan Award has been granted to Turkish contemporary painter Neş'e Erdok, according to the Aydın Doğan Foundation.

The award, which has been issued since the establishment of the foundation in 1996, aims to encourage and reward individuals who have committed their careers to contributing to humanity in the fields of arts, science and culture.  

The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of democracy and freedom that has greeted countless immigrants to the shores of America was inspired by a project representing an Arab woman guarding the Suez Canal according to a recent research.

The Statue of Liberty was originally designed to be a Muslim woman, the Smithsonian Institution's magazine has claimed.

An article on the government-administered museum's blog, Smart News, claims one of the designers of Lady Liberty drew inspiration from monuments in Egypt and originally intended to construct a veiled female peasant on the Suez Canal.

The museum was established in 2010 in the village of Baksı by Professor Hüsamettin Koçan and is located 45 kilometers away from the eastern Black Sea city of Bayburt.
