Full moon

Under the hunter’s moon

The "hunter's moon," the October full moon, rises above the Acropolis. The phenomenon is essentially a supermoon as it coincides with the period when the moon is closest to the Earth's orbit. The names of the moon are usually associated with the activities that took place at this time of year. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term "hunter's moon" dates back to 1710.

Rare blue supermoon dazzles stargazers

Astronomy enthusiasts were in for a treat on Aug. 30 night: a rare "super blue Moon" that won't be seen again for more than a decade.

Supermoons occur when the Moon passes through its perigee, or the point that takes it closest to Earth during its elliptical orbit. This makes it look about 14 percent bigger compared to when it is at its furthest point, and a touch brighter.

Two supermoons in August mean double the stargazing fun

The cosmos is offering up a double feature in August: A pair of supermoons culminating in a rare blue moon.

Catch the first show tomorrow evening as the full moon rises in the southeast, appearing slightly brighter and bigger than normal. That's because it will be closer than usual, just 222,159 miles (357,530 kilometers) away, thus the supermoon label.

Watch Flower Super Moon Tonight

The next full moon, otherwise known as the Flower Moon, is set to grace our skies tonight, May 26, reaching its official peak at around 11:30 pm. It will also be the second supermoon of the year.

A full moon occurs every 29.5 days and happens when the Moon is completely illuminated by the Sun's rays. It occurs when the Earth is directly aligned between the Sun and the Moon.
