COP28: US Announced International Fusion Plan

Special climate envoy and former US secretary of state John Kerry unveiled and announced the launch of an international plan to boost fusion, saying the emission-free technology could become a vital tool in the fight against climate change.

To begin with, the plan is supported by 35 nations and will focus on research and development, supply chain issues, regulation and safety.

“We would like to get to a prototype (of a nuclear fusion reactor) in five generations,” said Dr. Thomas McGuire, the director of the Revolutionary Technology division at Lockheed Martin’s famed Skunk Works. “If we can meet our plan of doing a design-build-test generation every year, that will put us at about five years, and we’ve already shown we can do that in the lab.”
