Bangladesh's army chief says will 'form an interim government'

Bangladesh's army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman said Monday he would "form an interim government" after the prime minister resigned and fled the capital in the face of overwhelming protests.

"I am taking full responsibility," the general said, dressed in military fatigues and cap, although it was not immediatly clear if he would head a caretaker government.

Thousands of Bangladeshi protesters, many wielding sticks, crowded into a central Dhaka square Sunday for mass protests demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign following a deadly police crackdown.

Asif Mahmud, one of the key protest leaders in a nationwide civil disobedience campaign, asked supporters to be ready to fight.

The Supreme Military Council, if it can still be called so after all the changes made in its structure, convened and ended within four hours with a decision to reshuffle almost the entire command of the Turkish Armed Forces.

Number of Turkish generals decreases 40 percent with post-coup attempt dismissals

The number of generals and admirals in the Turkish military has decreased 40 percent due to the dismissals after the coup attempt, retirements and resignations, according to the data gathered by the state-run Anadolu Agency. 

The number of generals and admirals has decreased from 326 to 196 after the military coup attempt on July 15 last year.

The new Army Chief of Staff is lieutenant general Alkiviadis Stefanis, until now commander of the NRDC-GR, the new Navy Chief of Staff is vice admiral Nikolaos Tsounis, until now Commander of the National Defense School, and the new Air force Chief of Staff is lieutenant general Christos Christodoulou, until now commander of Tactical Air Force Command.

 

End of duty comes for coup suspects

Turkey’s Chief of General Staff is expected to be Land Forces Commander Gen. Hulusi Akar as the second possible candidate Gen. Servet Yörük retired in the latest Supreme Military Board (YAŞ) meeting.
At the same meeting, the retirement of commanders who will be retried in the Balyoz (Sledgehammer) coup plot case were approved.
