German FM's remarks on Turkey unfortunate, aimed at internal politics 

Remarks by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel on Turkey amount to an investment for the upcoming elections in the country, Presidential spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said on July 20, calling them "unfortunate."

"We think that those unfortunate statements are an investment for internal politics aimed at the approaching elections in Germany," Kalın said at a press briefing.

Schulz accuses Merkel and Schaeuble on Greece

German SPD leader Martin Schulz set out plans to boost investment and enhance European unity, accusing Chancellor Angela Merkel of making empty promises.

Schulz also blamed Merkel and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble for weakening European unity after having led efforts to impose more austerity measures on Greece as part of the eurozone's bailout programs.

Germany: Parliament Legalizes Same-sex Marriage

German lawmakers voted to legalize same-sex marriage in their last session before the September election. Lawmakers voted 393 for legalizing "marriage for everybody," and 226 against with four abstentions.

Germany plans new emissions testing body after VW scandal

The German transport ministry announced plans on June 27 to set up a new institute to test vehicle emissions to try to restore consumer confidence after the Volkswagen scandal.

The ministry said it would found a new testing institute involving the auto industry, ministries, consumer organizations and environmental groups.

Schaeuble says he's open to German parliament discussing Greek deal

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has said he is not opposed to an open discussion in parliament on the euro zone's decision to give Greece a new credit lifeline - even though internal party opposition may embarrass Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party just months before the election.
