Global Compact for Migration

On 18 December 1990, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

A majority of United Nations states adopted on Monday a non-binding global pact to better handle migrant flows, Morocco's foreign minister said, though fewer governments joined than had previously worked on the proposal.

Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita announced the decision as host of the UN conference in Marrakesh. There was no formal vote.

The US government disavowed the negotiations late last year, and since then Australia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Poland and Slovakia have pulled out of the process, reported France24. 

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was due in Marrakesh on Monday for the launch of a two-day United Nations conference on migration. 

UN special representative for migration Louise Arbour says she is "very confident" on the future of an international pact on migration despite a string of countries opting out, reported AFP.

Bulgaria is the latest country refusing to sign the UN global migration agreement, following Hungary, Poland, Croatia, and the Czech Republic.

Although approved in July by all 193 UN members, except the US, several countries from Central and Eastern Europe are now stepping back.

The Czech Republic on Wednesday joined the growing ranks of European Union countries that reject a United Nations pact to regulate the treatment of migrants worldwide.

Several countries lining the so-called "Balkan route" will be joining the United States, Austria, and Hungary in opposing the planned international-level deal on easing migration.
