Global warming

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) İzmir deputy Murat Bakan filed a parliamentary question the other day for Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım to ask why Turkey has not brought the Paris Agreement it has signed to parliament's general assembly. This was a timely parliamentary question while climate change continues to be the hottest subject in the world. 

The 22nd United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP22) took place last month in Marakesh.

It was the first follow-up to the 21st conference in Paris where an agreement was reached.

The followers of the Turkish press have not read much about it. Some might think this is due to the intensity of Turkey's agenda.

Although the Paris Agreement on Climate Change entered into force on November 4 (marking the first time that governments of different countries have agreed legally binding limits to global temperature rises), leading international scientists are still worried about global warming.

Fears that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will pull out of the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit global warming pushed almost 200 nations at climate talks in Morocco on Nov. 17 to declare action an "urgent duty." 

The year 2016 will "very likely" be the hottest on record, the U.N. said Nov. 14, warning of calamitous consequences if the march of global warming cannot be halted.

The UN  reported this year to “very likely” be the hottest on record, making it the third consecutive year that record temperatures have been broken.  It also noted that 16 of the 17 hottest years recorded have been this century.

The world's nations gathered in Morocco Nov. 7 to flesh out a landmark climate deal that promises to save humanity from itself. A shadow was cast over the meeting due to the unpredictable result of the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 8. 

The Paris Agreement to combat climate change became international law on Nov. 4, putting pressure on countries to take action to slash greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming. 

This action comes after record-fast ratification by nations reassembling next week for a fresh round of U.N. climate talks. 

The Paris Environmental Agreement entered into force officially on Friday, reported Reuters, cited by BTA.

This will put pressure on nearly 200 countries to start reducing greenhouse gases emissions.

The agreement is aimed at keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

Global warming is likely to change the environment of the Mediterranean region in ways unseen in the past 10,000 years, reshaping forests and turning parts of Europe into desert, researchers warned on Oct. 27.

The Mediterranean is known as a hotspot for biodiversity, and it is warming up fast.
