Ottoman-era coins are being offered for sale for millions of Turkish Liras on e-commerce platforms, with a gold coin dated 1223 from the period of Mahmud II up for sale for 500 million liras and 10 coins dated 1327 from the reign of Mehmed V for 50 million liras.

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, gold and brass collector coins, along with a brass circulation coin, dedicated to the Completion of the Greater Union - Queen Marie.

The latest issue of commemorative gold coins issued by the Bank of Greece, as well as last year’s issue, have sold out, given Greek investors’ efforts over the past few months to try and find a “safer haven” in the still “capital controlled” and political crisis-plagued Greek economy.

Scuba divers have discovered the largest trove of gold coins ever found off Israel's Mediterranean coast, about 2,000 pieces dating back more than 1,000 years, the country's antiquities authority said on Feb.

Turks still favor a timeless investment strategy: Buy gold and hide it somewhere safe, usually under a pillow or under the mattress.

"I don't understand modern investments like stocks and forex. Gold is my family's traditional investment, as my mother always encouraged me to buy gold for savings," says 36-year-old Selda Kırpınar in Ankara, who stores away her gold at home.
